Incident hemodialysis patients age 67 & older. Catheter placements identified from physician/supplier claims during the two years prior to dialysis initiation & ICD-9-CM procedure codes during any inpatient hospitalization at the time of dialysis initiation. “Acute dialysis starts:” patients with an inpatient hospitalization at the time of initiation through the hospital’s emergency room, & a procedure code for hemodialysis. Comorbidities identified from Medicare claims during the two years prior to initiation.
